Scott Stevenson is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design who is currently living and creating in Brooklyn, NY.Tumblr (3.0; @work-of-scott)http://work-of-scott.tumblr.com/<img src="http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lxjn5jXkOv1r0isclo1_500.jpg"/><br/><br/><p>This design collaboration, <em><strong>Horse Eating Sun Dance</strong>, </em>was created with textiles designer Marta Maleck (RISD Textiles - 2010). Inspired by the ephemeral existence of once-mighty civilizations, this collection primarily references ancient Greek and Aztec civilizations. The design of the clothing references the shape of Möbius strip, while also relating to primitive yet sophisticated pattern designs, and portraying the cyclical patterns of our societies.  The weaving techniques, devoré, and jacquard designs used in certain garments reinvent early fabric construction techniques, while also examining topographical views and weathering effects on each culture’s respective ruins.  These anthropological ideas were then juxtaposed with the attitude of reggae artist Chaka Demus and designer Paul Poiret.</p> <p>Collection published in <strong>Emerging Fashion Designers 2</strong> - Sally Congdon-Martin - Schiffer Publishing</p> <p>Top: Silk georgette, silk/linen blend, and tulle - all hand-dyed. More specifically, I was interested in the idea of aliens visiting 19th Century France and viewing a gallery of Gustave Moreau and Orientalist paintings of the period.  The work, entrenched in cultural misappropriation, racism, exoticism, as well as, the misogyny of femme fatales and vampires seemed to highlight the absurdity of an alien visit. Also, I was inspired by ‘wunderkammer’ and curio collections, thinking that these extraterrestrial visitors would be collecting artifacts to learn something about our earth. These visitors, returning with souvenirs from their trip, would use these skewed cultural images and curios as a way of understanding our earth, though, possibly only finding our lacking consciousness of eachother.</p> <p>Scott Edward Stevenson</p> <p>Photo: Daniel Everett Patrick</p>http://work-of-scott.tumblr.com/post/10728196091http://work-of-scott.tumblr.com/post/10728196091Tue, 27 Sep 2011 11:10:00 -0400<img src="http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ls3y2og7hd1r0isclo1_500.jpg"/><br/><br/><p>My friend <strong>Amanda Phelan</strong> asked me to create some clothing for her Textiles Degree Project from the Rhode Island School of Design.  Using her digitally-printed and jacquard woven fabrics, I created clothing that blended well within Amanda’s collection, working with her concept.</p> <p>At our first meeting, Amanda presented two digitally-printed fabric panels that she felt a strong connection to the design, but, due to the complexity of the print, was having difficulty deciding on a particular direction for their use within specific piece of clothing. The garment above is the final result of our collaborative efforts. Amanda had created an amoeba-formed print with several ‘arms’ extending from a central elliptical form. After just one look, I knew that the most effective solution for the print would be to connect the two panels of the prints back to themselves, by connecting the ‘arms’ back to the ‘body’ and other arm shapes. This gown was created from two panels of the gold-toned charmeuse, with pattern matched insets of the third panel with orange-toned contrast.
